Protest shuts down Durban highway

Inanda Drive in Durban has been closed as protesters take over. Traffic has come to a standstill and police are trying to clear the highway.

A violent service delivery protest prevented hundreds of Durban residents from arriving at work before noon today.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that the Inanda Road offramps on the N2‚ which leads to Umgeni Business Park‚ Sea Cow Lake and Newlands West‚ were opened less than an hour ago.

“It is opened for now however the municipality’s waste department is clearing the debris on the roads‚” he said.

About 400 protesters began burning tyres‚ blockading the roads with rocks‚ and stoning cars from about 3am.

“They blockaded the road and then broke up in several groups to barricade other entrances and exits in the area‚” Zwane said.

The protesters were demanding RDP houses.

“There have been no arrests. Officers are still in the area should the protesters come back‚” Zwane said.
