Mr. Pieter Barend (Piet) Botha, a train driver, was shot twice and died after being robbed

Major train delays for commuters as Cape Town train driver is robbed and gunned down

It is with shock and dismay that the United National Transport Union (UNTU) has learned that one of its members, Mr. Pieter Barend (Piet) Botha, a train driver, was shot twice and died after being robbed at the Netreg Station in the Western Cape.

Mr. Botha was busy with refresher training on the central line and was waiting for a train after he had gotten off another train.

“This is another senseless murder on an innocent train driver who have dedicated his life to ensuring that commuters reach their destinations safely. UNTU condemn this barbaric act and plead with the public to come forward with any information that can assist the South African Police Service (SAPS) to put these murderers behind bars so that the law can take its cause,” says Mr. Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU.

UNTU also demands that the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) ensure that its stations are safe for employees and commuters to use. Mr. Harris said Prasa must investigate why there were not ample security present when this incident occurred.

UNTU also wants to convey our deepest sympathy and condolences with the family of Mr. Botha. For further enquiries phone Mr. Harris on +27 82 566 5516.

No trains apparently moving at moment..train driver was murdered on Khayelitsha line according to metrorail..All train drivers have stopped trains in sympathy. Not enough buses ..So I trust traffic can get members needing pick-up ..I see the trains standing towards maitland ..from my office.

Train commuting is a nightmare. Recently my daughter was robbed twice in as many trips to work. Last week her husband was stabbed and robbed on the train near Koeberg Road Station. A week before my husband and I were accosted on the same line.
We need security in the trains.

  3. My condolences to his family may he RIP

  4. PRASA should close the line until the following is done, inform the commuters and public that they must help to bring the PERPATRATOR in, ONLY then will the line be reopened, offer a REWARD for the ARREST of the MURDERER, Tell the public that they must help, a person in hiding with a RANSOM TAG attached cannot hide as even his closest friend will split on him for the REWARD. Hand that person in at the nearest POLICE STATION and let JUSTICE be done

  5. My heartfelt condolences to the family, I travel by train everyday and what really makes me angry is that the lighting in the carridges are not working, I travel first class and in most carridges there is no lighting which gives the ideal oppertunity to get robbed, we live in fear everytime we travel, please Prasa make our rides safer.

  6. murderes do as they like in this country, nobody cares particularly our government, why criminals do as they like, they are not scared they are fearless, the reason is they are aware that in south africa to kill a human being is no more a big deal, really we are no more save in this country. My condolences to his family.
