“We are aware of a British national that was hospitalised and we stand ready to provide consular assistance,” said the British High Commission’s South African spokesperson Isabel Potgieter.

She could not confirm his identity.

According to the Sun newspaper in England, the 59-year-old Briton was the target of a “honey trap” scam at the upmarket Westin Hotel on the Foreshore.

A woman apparently approached him at a bar in the city and spiked his drink.

When they returned to his hotel room, Kelly reportedly lost consciousness for several hours. His credit cards were apparently used fraudulently following the incident.

The Sun stated he was taken to hospital on March 6.

Kelly is the company’s security director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Western Cape police did not immediately respond to a request for information.
