CHILDREN GOING HUNGRY IN SA PRISONS

The Department of Correctional Services has admitted that children in juvenile centres across the country are going without food for more than 14 hours on weekends as a result of staff shortages.

1110874495The latest correctional services inspectorate report has found that most of those affected are teenagers.

In its 2013-2014 annual report, the inspectorate revealed the appalling conditions under which incarcerated children, especially those awaiting trial, are held.

It says the feeding schedules on weekends are unhealthy and it hopes a solution is found to the problem.

The department’s Vuyo Ndlovu said, “We looked at the report and we will try to improve. The numbers are few, so we will try and implement a system that accommodates them.”

  2. ‘The numbers are so few, we will try and implement a system that accommodates them’. What are those children doing in prison anyway? What kind of inhumane country are you running?
